5 Books That Made Me a Better Homemaker
There are few things as relaxing as curling up with a book for a few moments at the end of the day, and while I certainly enjoy a wholesome novel from time to time, I also find my spirit renewed as I take time to read more educationally focused books as well.
These five books are ones I’ve enjoyed, read, and sometimes even re-read over the years, as their messages have inspired me in my work as a homemaker and as a woman.
Whether you are a brand-new homemaker looking for some tips and tricks, or are a seasoned veteran simply feel as if your passion for homemaking needs rekindling, at least one of these lovely titles will help inspire you and give you some tools for your housekeeping.

1. At Home with Madame Chic
This book (and the others in the series) were some of my favorites in my early twenties, and I’m sure you’ll find them inspiring. Written from the perspective of Jennifer Scott, a California native who was visiting France as a foreign exchange student, At Home with Madame Chic details Jennifer’s eye-opening introduction into the routines of a French homemaker, skilled in the art of living by enjoying the small rituals and joys of day-to-day life. Years later, in her own California home, Jennifer finds herself surrounded by the mundane chores of daily life, and ponders back on how her French hostess elevated such tasks to an art. Jennifer structures her observations around the times of the day (morning routines, afternoon routines, and evening routines) and discusses topics such as creating beautiful meals at home, looking presentable for the day, and setting the tone of the home with music and candles. Both an inspiring and entertaining read, At Home with Madame Chic is one you’ll want to check out.
2. Gift From the Sea
This one is a hidden gem! I’m sure you’ve heard of Charles Lindbergh, the famous pilot; but have you heard of his wife? In Gift From the Sea, Anne Morrow Lindbergh describes her visit to a beachside cottage and her evaluation of her life as a mother and housekeeper. In her walks along the beach, she takes time to observe a variety of seashells, and as she does, discovers secrets for living well. As she explores such topics as simple-living, shedding unnecessary inhibitions, replenishing oneself in order to pour into others more effectively, and the maturing and working relationship of man and wife, she finds herself renewed and inspired as she prepares to return to her home, children, and husband. I was delighted to find a lovely old copy of this book secondhand, and it is a treasured addition to my library.
3. Modern Etiquette Made Easy
Don’t be frightened by the title! Myka Meier is as talented at writing an engaging book on etiquette as she is at teaching at her clients (some famous celebrities!) how to present and behave themselves in a charming way. Myka stresses how etiquette is fundamentally about treating others with respect and kindness, and gives step-by-step examples of how this can be executed. Filled with picture examples, stories, and easy-to-follow tips, Modern Etiquette Made Easy will give you more confidence as a hostess, a guest, and simply as a friend.
4. The Lifegiving Home
This one is a classic in the homemaking community, but I had to include it as it was one of the first books that filled me with a passion to create a lifegiving home. I first read it as a teenager, when my mom was in a book study focusing on this book, and immediately I was drawn to Sally’s charming descriptions, thoughtful encouragement, and cozy ideas for creating homes that minister to others. I’ve gone back to it more recently, and continue to be inspired by her godly wisdom and love for others. The Lifegiving Home is a must-read for every aspiring or veteran homemaker!
(Bonus: Sally Clarkson also has a study-guide companion, which is also an enjoyable read! Snag a copy here.)
5. Welcome Home
This beautiful book is a fantastic guide to creating a beautifully decorated home for every season, without breaking the bank or filling your home with clutter. Myquillyn also shares her down-to-earth approach to hospitality, how to structure your home to support your family’s rhythms, and ways to embrace your five senses in your home decorating. Filled with visual as well as intellectual inspiration, Welcome Home is one you’ll want to add to your book list!
I hope you found a book (or two!) that sparked your interest and inspires you in your homemaking and womanhood. And as I’m always on the hunt for a good book, please leave me a comment below with your favorite book about homemaking! Until next time!
